Exhibits

⟨Children’s Soul⟩,⟨Euphoria⟩, ⟨Lobster Flower⟩, etc.

In the museum’s outdoor sculpture park, visitors can experience contemporary artworks set within beautifully landscaped grounds that reflect the natural rhythm of Jeju. These sculptures interact with the elements—water, light, and wind—that Tadao Ando integrates into his architecture, shifting subtly with time and adding vitality to the museum’s open-air space. From Jaume Plensa’s Children’s Soul, evoking the innocence of children seated on a lush lawn, to David Gerstein’s Euphoria, radiating a kaleidoscope of color and light, and Rotraut Klein-Moquay’s Gitane, vibrant in its bold palette, visitors are invited to experience these dynamic works within the ever-changing embrace of nature.

List of Works

Children’s soul, 2012, Jaume Plensa

Jaume Plensa is a leading artist who pioneers public art that engages with the public, and his works are open to the participation and interaction of all viewers. Viewers can enter his works to take pictures, stroll around the sculptures, and take breaks while enjoying refreshments. Jaume Plensa establishes the concept of public art by presenting works that communicate with viewers in this way, and pioneers his own unique series of works. ⟨Children’s soul⟩ is one of a series of works that create shapes with sculpted text, and within his work, you can find various letters. He believes that 'letters' are the most beautiful material that best reveals culture, and he tries to incorporate that material into his work.

Gitane, 2008, Rotraut Klein-Moquay

Rotraut Klein-Moquay is well known as Yves Klein's wife and muse who inspired him. ⟨Gitane⟩ is a work that captures the artist's style of primarily working with large-scale, colorful sculptures. ⟨Gitane⟩, meaning 'gypsy,' evokes a sense of awe with its dynamic curves, flexible lines, and intense colors, much like a gypsy dancing.

Euphoria, 2013, David Gerstein

David Gerstein began his artistic journey as a children's book illustrator, and consequently, his works are characterized by vibrant colors and lively, playful illustrative elements. Through his pieces, which he considers a form of competition, he aims to convey messages of hope and comfort to people. His work is distinguished by its expression of diverse aspects of subjects as a single entity, and by its dynamic and rhythmic curved elements. ⟨Euphoria⟩ is a large-scale sculpture created through laser cutting and coloring techniques, and with a title that evokes 'a sense of happiness,' the artist seeks to capture the abundance of contemporary society, the joy of life, and good fortune within the artwork.

FOR YOU, 2005, Romero Britto

Romero Britto, a modern artist who incorporates Matisse's colors into Picasso's style and the creator of 'Neo-Pop Cubism,' showcases his unique style. His works, reminiscent of Pop Art, are vibrant and colorful, yet display flat shapes akin to Cubist pieces. The combination of vivid primary colors exudes energy, and the distinctive black outlines convey a sophisticated yet playful smile. These boldly colored and dynamically composed works embody his optimistic philosophy about life. ⟨FOR YOU⟩ is a piece that encapsulates Romero Britto's positive message of love, happiness, and joy, featuring his signature style from the heart shape to the vibrant colors.

Lobster Flower, 2020, Philip Colbert

Philip Colbert is known for his Lobtser character, and is also called the godson of Andy Warhol, master of Pop art. ⟨Lobster Flower⟩ is a delightful sculpture of a lobster wearing a flower. Through the eye of his alter ego, Lobster, he is exploring old masterpieces, contemporary art theory, and daily symbols. His cartoonistic character and patterns are reflections of digital culture’s visual elements. He connects these with traditional elements like crowns and armor, or borrows old masterpieces’ image, so that he could connect present with past, drawing it to the deeper art historical discourse.
